Isn’t it illegal for doctors to share your medical history with other doctors without your consent?

My mother recently went to one of those weight loss clinics to get Diet Pills. She had to fill out a form stating what medicaltions she was already taking. She isn’t on anything, but she got a prescription for lortabs a while back and she didn’t even think to put it on there because she’s no longer taking them. Anyways the doctor at the clinic somehow got this information without my mom knowing and told my mom in front of all the people at the clinic that she could go to jail for omitting information on the sheet! But I don’t understand how the doctor at this little weight loss clinic got my mom’s past medical info?? that’s a HIPPA violation isn’t it? And she told her all this while others could hear and made my mom look like some kind of drug addict. What should we do?

I know in NC (where I live) they keep a database with every narcotic, medication you have been prescribed in NC. I went to a pain clinic..and had to try and remember every medication I have been on…(which was a lot let me tell you) I did forget some..and then at the next appointment the doctor went over the list of medications I had omitted and the date they were filled. I was stunned, not because I was trying to hide anything, (I had honestly forgot) but because he knew about them. I asked how he had got the information and that’s when he told me about the database.
So this doctor at the weight loss clinic may not have talked to another doctor, but may have accessed a similar database in your state.
However it is not illegal to forget a medication you had been prescribed. She cannot be sent to jail for forgetting it and not including it on their sheet. That is an out and out lie. The most they could do to her is refuse to treat her.
Him talking about this in front of other patients may be a violation of HIPPA. I would look into this part of it for sure.
